Red Barn is all about the animals! We started out wanting to have lots of animals "just for fun" on our small acreage, then slowly realized that there were so many people interested in seeing them, that we had to open our doors! We love seeing the connection between children and animals. We also started to realize how hard it is to succeed financially on a small farm, and wanted to help educate people about some of the issues that face small farmers today.
Red Barn is home to many breeds of goats, sheep, chickens and ducks -but not just any old kind! We are very proud of our collection of rare domestic breeds - some of these animals you may not have ever seen or heard of! This is because we are actively preserving many of the heritage breeds that are no longer considered popular in todays industrialized farms. Due to the focus on massive production, factory farming has forgotten about important qualities such as good mothering ability, disease resistance, and temperament. As their populations dwindle, these rare breeds are actually in danger of extinction! Help us to save these fabulous animals! They are a valuable part of our heritage, as well as being essential for the development of sustainable agriculture. Our future food sources depend on the preservation of these genetic qualities. Fall in love with these animals, and pass the word!
